Sibelius Soundset creation - EZDrummer

by | |
Thought I could share this, if someone finds use for a custom EZDrummer (by Toontrack) soundset. I´ll briefly walk through some of the aspects.

--EDIT: I have rewritten the text a bit, there was room to make the instructions a bit simpler.

First, download the soundset-file itself (a zipped archive):

EZDrummer_soundset

EZDrummer is a very easy library to get good results fast, and especially with Sibelius: A single note/key triggers multiple samples, so a same note repeated doesn´t sound like a machine gun...

There are a couple of steps to do, start by placing the soundset into the right folder:
-The soundset is a file with an .xml-ending, place it inside Your Sibelius user directory. In Mac it´s (user name)->Library->Application Support->Sibelius Software->Sibelius 6->Sounds, create Sounds-folder if it does not exist.

Now reboot Sibelius.

You also need to create a Playback configuration:
-in Sibelius, choose Play->Playback Devices. It´s best (necessary) to create a new Playback configuration and save it under a name that best describes the plug-ins You want to use.
Next find Your installed EZDrummer plugin (and other plug-ins You want to use together) and activate it. Go to Manual Sound sets tab, under Device choose EZDrummer (the plug-in), and under sound set choose EZDrummer. Tick "Use manual sound set" and under channel select desired channel, and on Program name choose "Basic EZDrummer". And don´t forget to click Apply. Phew....
--Warning: Playback configurations are not always recalled correctly when changing scores. So if in doubt, check here that a correct configuration is selected.--

---

All that is left is to select a drumkit as the instrument (any type will do, jazz, rock...) and Sibelius should handle the rest. EZDrummer sounds can now be played using Sibelius´s default input keys and default Sibelius percussion noteheads. You can see these noteheads in Sibelius Reference on page 161 (v.6). I could have also used the General MIDI default keys, but I find the Sibelius layout comfortable, cause it relates to the actual "notes" in the treble clef. In other words, snare drum lives on C an octave above middle C.

I´ll try to answer any questions, leave feedback in any case!

I understand all of your instructions but the EZ Drummer device doesn't display in the Playback Configuration so I can't actually select it...is there somewhere I need to move the EZ Drummer VST? If there is, I can't find it.

Hi Lemon,

To be clear: On the playback devices panel, on the left-hand side, You can´t find EZDrummer listed as device (plug-in)? Two possible things:

1.) You haven´t correctly installed EZDrummer as a VST plug-in (or Audio Unit on the Mac). It should be automatically listed if the installation was correct.

2.) Check the options under "Audio Engine Options"-button: Be sure You have ticked "Use virtual instruments....." on top of the dialog. And You can also try the Rescan-button in the same dialog.

Hope that helps. Otherwise, sometimes easiest thing is just to de-install the whole (EZDr)-thing and re-install. I know, a pain.....

Thanks Jussi, I will try that!

A re-install did the trick, and everything is up and running fine. But now my question is...what process would I go through to add additional sounds to the soundset?

It only includes a handful of sounds, which makes sense since you made it for your own use, but I require more sounds from the default kit, and sounds aside from the default kit, as I also have the Jazz and DFH kits.

It also appears that all of the additional kits work under the same VST as the default, so it's not a matter of changing devices or anything.

Any pointers you could give me on modifying the xml file to add additional sound IDs? I really have no clue what I'm doing...

Hi Lemon,

real quickly from the top of my head:

Download Sound set editor:

http://www.sibelius.com/download/sse/license.html

Sound set editor installed, open the ezdrummer.xml, go to drum maps-tab and select EZDrummer. From there You´ll see a list of tones I´ve mapped. Just create new ones using "Add" and assign to a suitable key. The trick is to use a sound ID that best describes the instrument (drum). Check out Sound ID´s and Soundworld from the Sibelius manual.

If You want to use special articulations that are not associated with a drumset instrument (in Sibelius), You´ll have to define custom sound ID´s and include them in an instrument in Sibelius; this requires that You modify an instrument in Sibelius (House Style->Edit Instruments and there select a suitable drum set). This really gets quite complicated at some point, so if You can stick to basic drum set sounds, You don´t have to mess around with modifying instruments in Sibelius.

I can help if You have some specifics, but as each situation is really different, it´s usually just best to fool around and try things out.

Good luck,

Anna Krusis

I need a china cymbal sound too, have used your soundset and tried creating my own but I don't understand how to do this. Can you help? Anna

I also need help trying to create a soundset for Drumkit from Hell. How do I do this???? How does the soundset editor know where the DFH sounds are? I'm so confused!

Anna Krusis,

this is not easily explained in a couple of words, please see my reply above to lemon´s questions. It takes a bit of trying out with the sound set editor, and choosing the right sound ID´s.

If You desperately need a special soundset, You can also contact Jonathan Loving at:

http://soundsets.jonathanloving.com/

He is really the expert on this, and creates custom soundsets on-demand. I don´t know his charges, but the amount of work for a simgle drumkit is not that big anyway.

Just try to be persistent, use the soundset editor to go through other soundsets how they look like.

Best,
